CRYING BABIES © Susan Kane 2015 BMI

Lying awake, it's late at night, it's late in life.
We've lived in this house a long, long time
It's been mostly fine, most of the time.

Was it just yesterday, or twenty years ago, it’s hard to know
Time was when the babies cried.
We’d be up all night, until the light.

Long weary nights, I longed for sleep, never counted sheep
Warm baby at my breast, I stroked their heads
And breathed their scent.

Now when I wake in the night
All I hear is the sound
of a lonely barred owl
Or a coyote’s song
so why do I long
to hear babies now?

Crying babies haunt my dreams
I never thought I’d miss that sound
When the long night comes down.

I'll never hear my babies cry, never hear them again
When all the pretty birds leave the nest
And the old birds take their rest
When all the pretty birds leave the nest
And the old birds take their rest.
